Old St. Mary'S Church

Old St. Mary’s Church is the third oldest Roman Catholic Church in Detroit and the first German Church. It is styled in Victorian Gothic by Peter Dedericks and a native architect. The structure’s interior dimensions are considerably emphasized by its cool shades of blue. The length of the church is 176 feet, the width of the nave is 80 feet, and the transept is 116 feet. The ceiling of the nave at the center of the arch towers 90 feet from the floor. Father Martin Kundig founded the parish to serve the German-speaking immigrants. The Holy Spirit Fathers have faithfully served Old St. Mary’s Church since 1893. The Spiritan Fathers continue to exercise their rule of faith by making themselves advocates, supporters, and defenders of the weak and little ones. Old St. Mary’s Church’s daily mass attracts the business community, government, court employees, and out-of-town visitors. Now the church is in its 179th year of faith and service to God’s people.
